This unique coloring book by Brittany Nicole Cox and Al Collins is a compilation of machine-drawn patterns generated by a rose engine. Rose engines are hand-operated machines that were developed in the 16th century and used during the Victorian era for the decorative turning of wood, ivory, metal, and ceramics. The geometry of the patterns is determined by mathematical sequences often associated with sacred geometry and the golden mean. The MADE Ornamental Rose Engine Lathe, a modern machine designed in the tradition of the past, was used to create these patterns.
The front and back cover are pressed with white and silver foil. The binding is spiraled white metal wire, allowing the book to lay flat as you color. In addition to the original patterns from the first edition, we have added another 17, making 88 unique patterns.
The book is printed on 180lb uncoated white paper – so your coloring utensils won’t bleed through and colors stay true. This book is limited to 300 copies and is handmade here in Seattle Washington.
CONCEPT: In an effort to engage a more diverse group of individuals with the incredible designs the rose engine can generate, Brittany Cox approached Al Collins with the idea of a coloring book. Seeing that these patterns could be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, she seized on the opportunity of the coloring book boom and found her platform. In this highly accessible form, she hopes turners might take the opportunity to share these designs with others and their loved ones. The symmetry of the patterns drawn on paper to those turned on a box are made clear and the art form relatable to a broader audience. Al Collins and Brittany Cox hope this unique compilation will spark both inspiration and curiosity in equal measure.
